In Mexico, the consumption of any illegal drug in people between the ages of 12 and 65 increased in the last 4 years, according to the most recent National Survey on Drug, Alcohol and Tobacco Consumption (2016-2017) of the Federal Ministry of Health. Marijuana and cocaine are the most consumed substances in the country, according to the survey.

The objective of this survey is to know the "global and main" trends in drug use in Mexico, according to the document. The results of this survey show, among others, an increase in marijuana use among men and women of all ages, and the need to urgently implement prevention programs in some states.
Regarding adolescents (between 12 and 17 years old), the indices show that 6.4% of the surveyed population has used any drug at any time and the illegal drug most consumed by young people of this age range are marijuana, inhalants and cocaine.

Marijuana use among adolescents almost doubled compared to 2011 when the percentage was 2.4%, according to the report.

In Mexico, the use of marijuana for recreational purposes is illegal, but in April of this year the Chamber of Deputies of that country approved the use of marijuana for medicinal and therapeutic purposes.
